Warning signs of problem gambling
Warning signs include betting more than planned, chasing losses, hiding gambling, borrowing to bet and feeling restless when you cut back. If several sound familiar, set limits, take a break and talk to someone.
The signs of problem gambling usually build slowly. Spotting them early gives you time to act while changes are still easy to make.
Common warning signs
Problems tend to show up in four areas, and even one sign on its own is worth noticing.
- Money: betting more than you planned, chasing losses, borrowing or selling things to gamble.
- Behaviour: hiding or lying about gambling, spending more time betting than you intended, neglecting work or family.
- Feelings: restlessness or irritability when you try to cut back, and gambling to escape stress or low mood.
- Escalation: needing bigger bets to feel the same excitement.
What you can do
You do not need to wait for a crisis. Set deposit limits and loss limits, take a short break through PlayBreak, or block all regulated Ontario sites with BetGuard, the centralized self-exclusion service. A short break is also a good test: if stepping away for a few days feels hard or makes you irritable, that tells you something. Talking to a specialist is just as valid a first step, and ConnexOntario offers free, confidential support at any hour.
More than a money problem
The costs show up in time, relationships, work and mental health, even when the financial losses seem manageable. That is why the signs of problem gambling matter even if you are not in debt. If gambling is hurting your finances, relationships or mood, or you cannot stop when you want to, that is the signal to get support, and a health professional can assess your situation.
