Understanding First Bet Insurance and Risk-Free offers

“First Bet Insurance” (or a “Risk-Free Bet”) is a common welcome offer in Canada. While it sounds like a guarantee, it is actually a safety net for your initial wager. If your first bet loses, the sportsbook refunds your stake, but usually as bonus credits rather than cash.

How the qualifying bet works

This offer applies only to the very first bet you place after signing up.

  • Minimums: You often need to wager a specific amount (e.g., $10 CAD) at minimum odds (e.g., -200).
  • Order matters: If you place a small “test” bet first, that is the one insured. A larger second bet will not be covered.

The two possible outcomes

  • If you win: You keep your stake and the profit as withdrawable cash. The promotion is now over.
  • If you lose: The sportsbook triggers the insurance. You receive a refund up to the maximum limit (e.g., $500) in Bonus Bets or site credit.

The “Bonus Bet” catch

This is the most important part: a refund is not a “do-over” in cash.

  1. Stake not returned: If you win a bet using a $100 Bonus Bet, you only keep the profit. The $100 stake vanishes.
  2. Wagering (1x): You must bet the refund at least once before you can withdraw any winnings.
  3. Expiry: Most insurance refunds expire within 7 to 14 days.

Refund formats

Depending on the site, your refund arrives in one of three ways:

  • Single Token: One big bet that must be used all at once.
  • Split Tokens: Multiple smaller bets (e.g., five $20 tokens).
  • Site Credit: A flexible balance you can spend in any increment until it is gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the insurance refund paid out in withdrawable cash?

No. The refund is provided as Bonus Bets. You cannot withdraw this credit; you must wager it at least once, and only the winnings from that bet become cash.

What happens if my very first insured bet is a winner?

If you win, you receive your stake and profit normally. Because you didn’t lose, the insurance is not triggered, and you do not receive any extra bonus funds.

Why is the stake not returned on my refund bet?

When using a Bonus Bet token, the value of the token itself is not included in the payout. You only keep the net profit, unlike a standard bet made with real cash.
