Protecting your account with 2FA
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) acts like a second lock on your digital front door. Even if someone manages to get your password, they still won’t be able to access your account without the unique, time-sensitive code generated by your phone. Enabling this is the best way to keep your balance and banking information safe.
Why 2FA is essential
- Balance Protection: It prevents unauthorized withdrawals from your account.
- Privacy: It adds a shield around your Interac details and personal identity.
- Anti-Hacking: It blocks 99% of automated attacks that try to guess your password.
Option 1: Authenticator app (Recommended)
This is the most secure method because it doesn’t rely on the cellular network and can’t be intercepted by “SIM swapping.”
- Download the App: Install Google Authenticator or Authy from the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Access Security Settings: Go to Profile > Security > Two-Factor Authentication.
- Scan the QR Code: Open your app, tap the “+” icon, and scan the code shown on the site.
- Verify: Enter the current 6-digit code from your app into the site to finish the setup.
Option 2: SMS verification
This is a convenient choice if you prefer receiving a text message each time you log in.
- Select SMS: In your Security Settings, choose the SMS or Text Message option.
- Confirm Your Number: Enter your Canadian mobile number.
- Enter the Code: The system will text you a one-time code. Type it into the verification box on the site to link your phone.
Important: Save your backup codes
When you enable 2FA, the site will provide a list of Backup or Recovery codes. Write these codes down and keep them in a safe, physical place. If you ever lose your phone or it gets damaged, these codes are the only way to regain access to your account without waiting days for manual identity verification from customer support.
