Game weighting and minimum odds explained
Not all wagers are created equal when it comes to clearing a bonus. Canadian gambling platforms use Game Weighting for casinos and Minimum Odds for sportsbooks to ensure players take on a specific level of risk before unlocking cash.
Casino game weighting
“Weighting” is the percentage of your bet that counts toward the rollover. High-risk games like slots usually count 100%, while low-risk table games contribute significantly less.
| Game Category | Contribution % | Effect on a $10 CAD Wager |
| Slots & Scratch Cards | 100% | $10.00 clears from requirement. |
| Roulette & Baccarat | 10% – 20% | Only $1.00 or $2.00 clears. |
| Blackjack & Video Poker | 5% – 10% | Only $0.50 or $1.00 clears. |
| Live Dealer Games | 0% – 10% | May not contribute at all. |
Why the difference?
The house edge on Blackjack is often under 1%. Weighting prevents players from “washing” a bonus with low-risk bets. By applying a 10% weight, the casino ensures you are genuinely playing rather than performing a technical clearing of funds.
Sports betting rollover rules
Sportsbooks typically use Minimum Odds and Market Restrictions instead of percentage weighting. If a bet fails these criteria, it won’t count toward your progress:
- Minimum Odds: Most Canadian sites require odds of -200 (1.50) or higher. Betting on a heavy favourite at -500 (1.20) will not help clear your bonus.
- Cashed Out Bets: Using the “Cash Out” feature usually disqualifies the wager from the rollover.
- Opposite Betting: You cannot bet on both sides of the same game (e.g., both teams in a hockey match) to clear a bonus.
- Voided Bets: If a game is cancelled, the money returns to you but does not count toward your wagering goal.
Summary Tip: Slots and underdog sports bets are the fastest routes to clearing a bonus. If you prefer table games, be prepared for the process to take much longer.
