Minimum age requirements for betting in Canada
In Canada, the minimum age to bet online isn’t set by a single federal law. Instead, it depends on exactly where you are standing when you try to place a wager.
The 19+ provinces
In most of the country, the legal age for sports betting and online casinos is 19. If you are physically located in any of the following regions, you must be at least 19 to register and play:
- Ontario (Note: You can buy lottery tickets or play bingo at 18).
- British Columbia
- Saskatchewan
- The Maritimes: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador.
- The Territories: Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
The 18+ provinces
There are three provinces where the legal limit is lower. You can legally access regulated sites at 18 if you are in:
- Alberta
- Manitoba
- Quebec
Verification and geolocation
Every regulated platform uses a Know Your Customer (KYC) process to verify your age. This usually involves a soft credit check or a photo of your government ID.
Because the law is tied to your current location, travel can complicate things. For example, if an 18-year-old from Calgary (Alberta) travels to Vancouver (BC), their betting app will automatically block them. Geolocation software detects that you’ve crossed into a 19+ zone and will restrict access until you return to an 18+ province.
