Quick Answer

Betting phishing scams use fake emails, texts and social posts that create urgency and ask for your password, card details or a 2FA code. Never click the link. Open the app or type the address yourself, and report fake messages to the NCSC.

Betting phishing scams copy the look of bookmakers and casinos to steal logins, card details and one-time codes. They are easy to spot once you know the pattern.

Warning signs of betting phishing scams

  • Urgency: “verify now or your account will close.”
  • Too good to be true: surprise free bets or huge bonuses from a message you did not expect.
  • Wrong link: the address is slightly off or hidden behind a shortened link.
  • Requests for secrets: your password, full card number or a 2FA code. Real support never asks.

Fake support is another trick, with accounts on social media pretending to be customer service and often replying to a complaint within minutes. Judge a message by its link and its request, not by its logo, because branding is easy to copy.

What to do

Do not click anything. Open the official app or type the address yourself, and look for the same message inside your account, since a real operator shows security alerts there too. Forward suspicious emails to the National Cyber Security Centre at report@phishing.gov.uk and forward scam texts to 7726, which is free. A text from your bank about gambling is not automatically safe either: banks do not ask for full passwords or codes by text, so call the number on the back of your card and not the one in the message.

If you already clicked

Change your passwords first, then report. Tell your bank at once if you shared card details, and if you typed your betting login or a code, contact the operator, secure your email and watch your statements. Scammers may try your details on other sites, so change any password you reused.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What if the message looks exactly like my bookmaker’s?

Branding is easy to copy. Ignore the link, log in through the app and check for the same message there. If it is not in your account, it did not come from the operator.

Can scammers use my details after I report them?

Possibly, so change your passwords and watch your statements. Reporting does not undo what you shared, but it helps stop the scam reaching others.

Are fake betting apps common?

They exist, so install apps only from the store links on the operator’s own website and check that the company name matches the licence details in the footer.
