The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled for today, December 5th, in Washington. This historical tournament marks the debut of a new format featuring 48 national teams divided into 12 groups, each comprising four squads. The draw is set to take place at 2:00 PM Brasília and Buenos Aires time, 12:00 PM Eastern Time, and 5:00 PM GMT. While the draw happens on Friday, the complete schedule for the group phase, including match times and locations, will only be released the following day,.
Group Formation and Seeding
Each group will be composed of one team drawn from each of the four pre-defined FIFA pots. The pot assignments were determined based on the FIFA world ranking, ensuring the top teams are placed in Pot 1. As one of the host nations, Canada is automatically placed in Pot 1. Canada will be the head of Group B,. The other hosts, Mexico and the United States, are also Pot 1 seeds, heading Group A and Group D, respectively,,.
Pot Composition:
- Pot 1: Canada, Mexico, United States, Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
- Pot 2: Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, Iran, South Korea, Ecuador, Austria, and Australia.
- Pot 3: Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.
- Pot 4: Jordan, Cape Verde, Ghana, Curaçao, Haiti, New Zealand, along with the four UEFA Playoff winners (A, B, C, D) and the two Intercontinental Playoff winners (1 and 2).
The remaining 39 qualified teams were distributed among the pots according to the FIFA ranking from November 2025. Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, and England are among the established teams in the first pot.
Rules of the Draw
Teams will be distributed into groups based on the pot they are drawn from. A critical rule is that teams from the same continent cannot face each other in the group stage. However, groups involving the host nations (Mexico, United States, and Canada) are exceptions to this continental rule.
Due to having 16 UEFA teams across 12 groups, every group must contain at least one European selection, and four groups will have two. The remaining six slots in Pot 4 will be filled by the four European playoff winners and the two intercontinental playoff winners.
Key seeding requirements ensure competitive balance:
- The top two teams in the FIFA ranking (Spain and Argentina) will be placed in groups whose winners will only meet in the final.
- The same process applies to the third and fourth ranked teams (France and England).
Regarding the host team match-ups: Mexico will play the team drawn from Pot 3 in the opening game. The United States will also debut against a Pot 3 team, while Canada will play a team drawn from Pot 4. Each group stage round is structured with four confrontations of Pot 1 vs. Pot 2, four of Pot 1 vs. Pot 3, and four of Pot 1 vs. Pot 4.
The Role of Playoffs and the Draw Ceremony
The draw will occur before the full complement of 48 teams is decided. Four slots are allocated to the UEFA playoffs, where 12 teams are fighting for qualification across four keys. Expected UEFA match-ups include Italy vs. Northern Ireland, Ukraine vs. Sweden, Turkey vs. Romania, and Denmark vs. North Macedonia, with the semi-finals scheduled for March 2026. The intercontinental playoff, involving teams from South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, concludes on March 26 and 31, 2026, determining the final two spots.
Four American sports legends have been chosen to conduct the pots during the ceremony: Wayne Gretzky will handle Pot 4. Tom Brady (Pot 1), Shaquille O’Neal (Pot 2), and Aaron Judge (Pot 3) will handle the other pots. The event will be hosted by Kevin Hart and Heidi Klum, featuring performances from Andrea Bocelli, the Village People, Robbie Williams, and Nicole Scherzinger.
