Poker betting rounds split a Texas Hold’em hand into four windows in which chips may enter the pot, and each window has its own order of play. The first window opens before any shared card is visible, and the next three follow the flop, the turn and the river. Between windows the dealer reveals more cards, so every decision is made with a little more of the final hand on show. Here you will find what happens in each window, the six moves a player has, who posts the blinds and what sets the largest wager in fixed-limit, pot-limit and no-limit games. A hand with four seats is then followed chip by chip, and three exercises ask which of three showdown hands is the winner.

Key Takeaways: Poker Betting Rounds

  • Four Betting Rounds: Play proceeds across four windows: pre-flop, flop, turn, and river, with the dealer revealing community cards between rounds to expand each hand.
  • Blinds and Position: The dealer button rotates clockwise each hand, with the small and big blinds posted to initiate the pot, while the button enjoys the advantage of acting last post-flop.
  • Six Available Moves: Depending on whether a bet has been placed, players can fold, check, bet, call, raise, or go all-in to contest the pot before moving to the next street.
  • Betting Structures: Maximum stakes depend on format: fixed-limit sets strict wager sizes, pot-limit caps bets at the active pot, and no-limit permits wagering a player’s entire stack.

Four Windows for Betting

The deal gives every seat two private hole cards, and five shared cards are revealed in three steps. Each window works like this:

  1. Pre-flop: nobody has seen a shared card, and the blinds are already in the pot. The seat after the big blind speaks first.
  2. Flop: three shared cards are turned up. The first seat still in the hand after the button speaks first.
  3. Turn: one more shared card appears, and the order of play is the same as on the flop.
  4. River: the fifth and final shared card appears, the order of play is unchanged and a showdown follows if two or more players remain.

The big blind has the last word pre-flop and may raise if every other player has just called. Online, the software moves the button, posts the blinds and keeps count of the pot, so what is left for you to follow is the order of play.

Button and Blinds

A small disc, the dealer button, marks the seat that speaks last after the flop. It travels one seat clockwise once every hand is over. The seat immediately clockwise of it puts in the small blind, commonly half of the big blind, and the seat after that puts in the big blind, which sets the minimum wager. Blinds count as wagers, so the small blind pays only the remainder to call.

With two players the roles are different: the button pays the small blind, and the other player pays the big blind.

The Six Moves

What you may do depends on whether a wager is already waiting for you.

MoveAvailable whenEffect
FoldAt every turn to actYour cards and any share of the pot are given up
CheckNo wager has been made in the roundYou stay in the hand for nothing
BetNo wager has been made in the roundYou make the opening wager
CallA wager is waitingYou pay exactly what it takes to match it
RaiseA wager is waitingYou match it and add to it
All-inA call is beyond your stack, or by choice in no-limitYour whole stack goes in

A round is over when each player left has matched the largest wager or has no chips remaining, and nobody else is still to act.

What Limits a Wager

The betting format fixes how big an opening wager or a raise may be, and it forms part of the game’s name, as in pot-limit Omaha.

FormatSmallest wagerLargest wager
Fixed-limitOne set size per round: the big blind on the flop and before it, double that on the turn and riverThe same set size
Pot-limitThe big blindThe pot, once the chips needed for a call have been added
No-limitThe big blind, and any raise at least as large as the biggest earlier one in the roundEvery chip in your stack

If a player wagers more than an all-in rival can match, the extra chips form a side pot, which only the players who paid into it are able to win.

One Hand With Four Seats

Four players share a table with blinds of 5 and 10 chips. Priya has the button, Luc puts in the small blind and Maya puts in the big blind, and Jean sits next to Maya. Maya holds 8h 8d and Luc holds Ac Jc. Jean and Priya fold at some stage, so their cards never come into play. The pot is tracked below.

StageMovesChips in the pot
BlindsLuc posts 5 and Maya posts 1015
Pre-flopJean folds, Priya calls 10, Luc adds 5 and Maya checks30
Flop: 8c Js 4dLuc checks, Maya bets 10, Priya folds and Luc calls 1050
Turn: JhLuc and Maya both check50
River: 2sLuc checks, Maya bets 20 and Luc calls 2090
ShowdownMaya turns her cards over first, then LucMaya collects 90

Maya made the last wager, so she shows first. Her best five cards are a full house, eights full of jacks, and Luc ends with only three of a kind, jacks, which sends all 90 chips to Maya. The hands of Jean and Priya were folded and are never revealed.

Exercises: Name the Winner of the Hand

Every exercise reaches a showdown among three players with five shared cards. Find each best five and say who wins.

❓ Practice: Which Hand Wins?

Board: Ks Kd 7h 7c 3s. Maya’s hole cards: Kh 2c. Jean’s hole cards: 3d 3h. Priya’s hole cards: Ah Qs. Who wins?

Maya has a full house, kings full of sevens, Jean has a full house, threes full of kings, and Priya has two pair, kings and sevens, with an ace kicker. Both full houses are close, and Jean’s pair is the higher one, but the three of a kind is compared first, and kings beat threes. Maya wins.

Board: 9s 8s 3s 6d Kc. Maya’s hole cards: As 2s. Jean’s hole cards: 7h 5c. Priya’s hole cards: Kh Kd. Who wins?

Maya has a flush, ace-high, Jean has a straight, nine-high, and Priya has three of a kind, kings. A flush is above a straight, and a straight is above three of a kind. Maya wins.

Board: 9h 8h 7h 6h 5h. Maya’s hole cards: 2c 3d. Jean’s hole cards: Ac Ad. Priya’s hole cards: Kc Kd. Who wins?

The board already shows a straight flush, nine-high, and no hole card can improve on it. All three players play the board, so no one is ahead. Maya, Jean and Priya split the pot.

❓ Poker Betting Rounds Questions: Frequently Asked Questions

Why are blinds posted before the cards are dealt?

They are compulsory wagers from the two seats after the button, put in to guarantee that the pot holds something worth winning. Because the button moves every hand, the cost rotates around the table instead of falling on one player. The small blind is usually half of the big blind. Blinds are forced wagers that start the pot.

May I check once another player has bet?

No. Checking means passing without paying, and it is open only while no wager has been made in the round. When a wager is waiting, your choices are to fold, call or raise. The single exception is the pre-flop big blind, which may check if every other player has only called. A check needs a round without wagers.

What are burn cards?

Before the flop, the turn and the river the dealer sets one card aside face down, and these cards take no part in the hand. Online, the software does this unseen and nothing changes for you. The shared cards are simply those dealt after each discard. Burn cards are set aside unseen.

Can a hand end before the river?

Yes. When all players but one have folded, the player left collects the pot without showing a hand, and the remaining shared cards are not needed. A hand can also reach an early showdown when all remaining players are all-in, and the missing cards are then dealt out. A hand ends once only one player is left.
