Published:Online baccarat (punto banco) comes in two primary formats: Random Number Generator (RNG) software games and live dealer video streams. While both use the exact same drawing rules, different variants adjust the pace, the way cards are revealed, or how Banker payouts are settled. Here is how software games, live tables, speed formats, and commission-free options like Super 6 and EZ Baccarat work in UK online casinos.
The Two Main Formats
Online lobbies organise baccarat tables into two main categories based on how the game runs. Both use the standard tableau drawing rules, which we explain in our third card rule and tableau guide, and both count hand totals using modulo 10 scoring. Choosing between them comes down to whether you prefer playing at your own speed or want the atmosphere of a real studio table.
| Model | How the Result Is Generated | What You See on Screen | Game Pace |
| RNG Software | Computer algorithm (Random Number Generator) | Fully animated virtual table and digital cards | Fast, player-controlled |
| Live Dealer | Physical card shoe dealt by a human croupier | High-definition real-time video stream from a studio | Standard (about 48 seconds) or faster |
| First Person | RNG software with a live switch button | 3D virtual room with a “go live” option | Player-controlled |
First Person games sit in the middle, running as an RNG title with an integrated button that moves your session straight to an active live table.
RNG Baccarat: Software and Certification
RNG baccarat runs entirely on software. When you start a round, the algorithm draws cards at random from a virtual shoe and applies the tableau rules automatically. Because the software calculates every total instantly, you can play at your own speed without waiting on other players or a dealer.
In the UK, game fairness is enforced through technical standards set by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC). RNG games must follow RTS 7 (Generation of random outcomes), which requires results to be unpredictable and to pass statistical tests of randomness. The same standard bans adaptive games, so software cannot adjust outcomes based on your past wins or losses. The Commission also requires licensees to have new products tested by an approved test house before release.
You can check a casino and its games yourself. A licensed UK casino must show a statement that it is licensed and regulated by the Gambling Commission, together with its Gambling Commission account number and a link to its licensing record on the Commission’s website. You will usually find this in the footer of the site. At the table, clicking the help or info icon opens the game rules, paytables, and official Return to Player (RTP) rates.
Live Dealer Baccarat: Studios, Croupiers, and Streams
Live dealer baccarat streams a physical table straight to your screen from a dedicated gaming studio. A professional croupier manages the game, shuffles the decks, and pulls physical cards from a shoe on camera. The result comes from those real cards, not from an RNG.
You place your bets using a digital overlay on your screen during a set countdown. Once betting closes, the dealer deals the physical cards. Card scanners or sensors built into the shoe and table read each card as it comes out, so the system can display the totals and settle payouts right away.
Many live tables also have a chat box where you can talk to the dealer and other players, giving you the feel of an in-person table while betting online.
Speed, Squeeze, and Lightning Baccarat
Live casino lobbies offer a few specialised variations that change the round tempo, visual presentation, or payout tables without changing the core drawing rules.
Speed Baccarat cuts down the waiting time between rounds. While standard live baccarat takes about 48 seconds per hand, Speed Baccarat finishes each round in roughly 27 seconds by dealing cards face up immediately after bets close.
Squeeze Baccarat focuses on the traditional ritual of revealing cards slowly. The dealer bends and peels the edges of face-down cards on camera before showing the numbers. It adds suspense to the reveal, though it has no impact on hand scores or your odds of winning.
Lightning Baccarat adds random prize multipliers to standard punto banco play. Before each hand, the game picks one to five Lightning Cards and gives each a multiplier from 2x to 8x. If your winning hand includes Lightning Cards, your payout is multiplied, and the multipliers stack when more than one is in the winning hand, up to 512:1 on a Player or Banker win.
To fund these boosted payouts, Lightning Baccarat adds a 20% fee to your main bet, and some base payouts differ from standard baccarat. Because of that, standard payouts and house margins do not apply to it. You can review the standard payouts and baseline house edges in our guide on baccarat bets, payouts and house edge.
Super 6 and EZ Baccarat
Standard baccarat takes a 5% commission on winning Banker bets, leaving a payout of 19:20 (0.95:1), as explained in our guide on baccarat bets, payouts and house edge. Commission-free tables remove this fee, but adjust other payouts to balance the maths.
Super 6 (also called Punto 2000) pays even money (1:1) on most winning Banker hands. The exception happens when the Banker wins with a score of exactly 6: in that case, the bet pays 1:2 (giving you 50% profit, such as £150 total on a £100 bet). That single payout cut makes up for the missing commission and pushes the Banker house edge up to about 1.46%.
EZ Baccarat also pays 1:1 on Banker wins without a commission. Instead of taking a cut, it turns a winning three-card Banker total of 7 into a push. That rule leaves the Banker edge at about 1.02%, close to standard baccarat.
EZ Baccarat often includes side bets like Dragon 7 (paying 40:1 on a three-card Banker 7 win) and Panda 8 (paying 25:1 on a three-card Player 8 win). Both carry high house edges, about 7.61% for Dragon 7 and 10.19% for Panda 8. Availability for EZ Baccarat and these side bets varies across UK online casinos.

History and Outcome Panels (Scoreboards)
Online baccarat screens often include scoreboards called roadmaps, such as the Bead Plate or Big Road. These boards track past results from the current shoe, marking Player wins, Banker wins, and Ties with coloured markers.
Many players use these boards to look for streaks or patterns during a session. However, scoreboards are strictly visual logs with no predictive value. Each baccarat round is an independent event, and past streaks have no effect on future cards or on the house edge.
Choosing a Format
The right format depends on how you like to play. RNG tables suit beginners and anyone who wants to set the pace. Live dealer tables suit players who want a real dealer and the rhythm of a casino floor. First Person games sit in between. Which tables you can open depends on the licensed operator you use.
Pace also affects cost. At about 27 seconds a round, Speed Baccarat allows roughly 130 bets an hour if you bet every round, compared with about 75 at a classic live table. The house edge per bet is the same, so faster play means more money wagered and a higher expected cost per hour. Whatever the format, set a session budget and a time limit before you start.
