Online Blackjack Guides: Rules, Strategy and Payouts
Blackjack is the card game where you try to beat the dealer by finishing closer to 21 without going over. It is also one of the few casino games where your own decisions change the odds: at a standard 3:2 table, good rules and correct play keep the house edge at roughly 0.4% to 0.7%. This hub collects every BoldGambler guide on online blackjack for US players: how a hand works, what each button does, payouts and table rules, basic strategy, regional variants, and live dealer versus RNG tables.
Real-money online blackjack is available only through state-licensed casinos, so this page also shows where it is legal and what to check before you play.

The Blackjack Rules That Matter Most
Two tables can look identical and still cost very different amounts, so check the rules panel before you play. This table shows the rules that matter most and roughly how much each one moves the house edge, based on published figures for multi-deck games.
| Rule | Better for You | Worse for You | Approximate Effect on the House Edge |
| Payout on a natural blackjack | 3:2 | 6:5 | 6:5 adds about 1.4% |
| Dealer on soft 17 | Stands (S17) | Hits (H17) | H17 adds about 0.22% |
| Double after split (DAS) | Allowed | Not allowed | DAS lowers the edge by about 0.14% |
| Late surrender | Offered | Not offered | Surrender lowers the edge by about 0.07% |
| Dealer hole card | Dealer peeks for blackjack | No hole card (ENHC) | ENHC adds about 0.11% |
| Number of decks | Fewer decks | More decks | Eight decks instead of one add about 0.5% |
Check the natural-blackjack payout first, because it costs the most. Our blackjack payouts, table rules and house edge guide explains each rule and where the numbers come from, and the basic strategy guide shows how to play every hand once you are seated.
Where Online Blackjack Is Legal in the US
Real-money online casino gaming is legalized state by state. As of September 2026, state-regulated online casinos are live in these seven states:
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Michigan
- New Jersey
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- West Virginia
Maine legalized online casino gaming in January 2026 through its tribal nations, but as of early September 2026 no licensed online casino had launched there. Nevada permits online poker, not online casino games.
Players generally must be 21 or older, and licensed operators use geolocation to confirm that you are inside the state while you play. Outside these states there is no state-licensed real-money online blackjack, and offshore or sweepstakes sites are not a substitute for state regulation. Laws change as new states act, so check your state regulator’s current rules before you deposit.

Play Responsibly
Blackjack is paid entertainment with a built-in house edge, not a way to make money. Set a deposit limit and a time limit before you start, and stop when you reach them. Licensed US casinos offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and our responsible gaming page explains how to use them.
If gambling stops being fun, call 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) or text 800GAM to reach the National Problem Gambling Helpline. It is free, confidential and open 24/7.
