Avoiding the drop is entirely in Tottenham’s hands, but they face a grueling final-day fixture against Everton this weekend to secure their top-flight safety.
Spurs have not been relegated from the top tier since the 1976/77 campaign, though they bounced back immediately by winning promotion the very next season. This term, however, the North London club find themselves hovering perilously close to the bottom three, staring relegation right in the face. They have endured a dismal run of form, picking up just two wins from their last 19 Premier League matches (W2-D7-L10).
West Ham currently occupy 18th place and have avoided the drop since the 2010/11 season. Yet, according to the bookmakers, the Hammers are the outfit firmly expected to be playing Championship football next season.
Premier League Relegation Scenarios
Tottenham simply need to beat Everton on the final day to mathematically guarantee their Premier League survival. In truth, a single point should get the job done, barring an astronomical and highly improbable swing in goal difference.
If West Ham fail to beat Leeds United, then Roberto De Zerbi’s side will retain their Premier League status regardless of how they fare against the Toffees.
For West Ham to escape the drop, Nuno Espírito Santo’s men must beat Leeds, and they need Tottenham to lose against Everton.
If Spurs manage a draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Hammers would realistically be doomed; they would need to hammer Leeds by a 12-goal margin just to pull level on goal difference and stay up.
West Ham will be relegated if:
- Tottenham win.
- OR Tottenham draw and West Ham lose, draw, or win by fewer than 12 goals.
Tottenham will be relegated if:
- Tottenham lose and West Ham win.
- OR Tottenham draw and West Ham win by more than 12 goals.
