Bac Bo vs baccarat is a comparison of two games with the same three bets and very different engines. Both ask you to back Player, Banker or a tie, but baccarat settles the round with cards and Bac Bo settles it with four dice, and that change reaches the rules, the odds and the pace. On Player or Banker, Bac Bo costs 1.13%, while baccarat costs 1.06% on Banker and 1.24% on Player. The Tie bet depends on the baccarat rate: 4.48% in Bac Bo against 14.36% in baccarat at 8 to 1 and 4.84% at 9 to 1. This guide lines the games up bet by bet, using exact figures for an eight-deck baccarat shoe that we worked out ourselves, and adds the dice games that Bac Bo is most often compared with.
Same Three Bets, Different Engines
Bac Bo takes its bet names from baccarat and its dice from Sic Bo. That explains why the first screen looks familiar to baccarat players, with Player, Banker and Tie where they always sit. Underneath, nothing is dealt. Each side adds up two dice, so a side’s total runs from 2 to 12, and nobody draws a card or follows a drawing rule.
Baccarat works the other way round. Cards come from a shoe of usually eight decks, which is 416 cards, each hand totals between 0 and 9, and fixed third-card rules decide whether a hand draws. A baccarat round therefore has more steps than a Bac Bo round, which is a single throw, although how long each step takes depends on the operator.
The Two Games Side by Side
The table sets out the rules that matter for a player, with baccarat described as the usual eight-deck game. Each row can be checked against the rules panel of a live table.
| Feature | Bac Bo | Baccarat |
| What decides the round | Four dice, two per side, each thrown by its own shaker | Cards dealt from a shoe, usually eight decks |
| Side totals | 2 to 12 | 0 to 9 |
| Extra draws | None | Third-card rules decide whether a hand draws |
| Player win pays | 1 to 1 (evens) | 1 to 1 (evens) |
| Banker win pays | 1 to 1 (evens) | 19 to 20, which is evens less a 5% commission |
| Tie pays | 4 to 1 up to 88 to 1, by total | 8 to 1 or 9 to 1, depending on the casino |
| Player and Banker bets on a tie | Lose 10% of the stake | Push, so the bet neither wins nor loses |
Two rows carry most of the difference. Bac Bo has no commission, and it takes a share of the stake on ties, while baccarat charges a commission on Banker wins and leaves ties alone.
Where Each House Edge Comes From
Bac Bo’s two sides are mirror images. Each wins 575 of the 1,296 dice combinations, so on decided rounds an evens bet breaks even. The whole edge comes from the 10% charge on ties: a tie arrives in 11.27% of rounds and costs 0.10 chips per chip staked, which makes 1.13%.
Baccarat’s sides are not mirror images. The Banker hand wins 45.86% of rounds against 44.62% for the Player hand, so a Player bet starts at a disadvantage and casinos charge a 5% commission on Banker wins. Ties cost neither side anything, because those bets push.
| Bet | Chance in Bac Bo | Chance in baccarat | House edge in Bac Bo | House edge in baccarat |
| Player | 44.37% | 44.62% | 1.13% | 1.24% |
| Banker | 44.37% | 45.86% | 1.13% | 1.06% |
| Tie | 11.27% | 9.52% | 4.48% | 14.36% at 8 to 1, 4.84% at 9 to 1 |
The baccarat figures come from our own exact count of an eight-deck shoe, and they agree with the edges published by an independent analyst. A table that changes the commission or the tie rate would change them, so read the rules panel of the one you are using.
The Tie Bet in Each Game
In baccarat the Tie bet usually pays 8 to 1, although one reference work says most UK casinos pay 9 to 1. At 8 to 1 it costs 14.36%, the heaviest charge in the game, and at 9 to 1 the cost falls to 4.84%, close to the 4.48% of Bac Bo. Bac Bo pays by total, from 4 to 1 up to 88 to 1, and its five rates add up to that edge.
Two differences stand out. A Bac Bo tie is more frequent, at 11.27% of rounds against 9.52% in baccarat. And the Bac Bo rate follows the total, so the common ties pay little and the rare ones pay a great deal. The Tie bet is still the dearest bet at a Bac Bo table, about 3.2 times the cost of a side, and the tie bet guide shows the arithmetic.
The Same Pace, a Different Bill
The price of an hour is the number of rounds, multiplied by the stake, multiplied by the edge. We have not measured how many rounds either game deals in an hour, and operators differ, so the table holds the pace equal and varies it. It shows the expected cost of 1 chip a round.
| Rounds an hour | 1 chip on a Bac Bo side | 1 chip on baccarat Banker | 1 chip on baccarat Player |
| 60 | 0.68 | 0.63 | 0.74 |
| 90 | 1.01 | 0.95 | 1.11 |
| 120 | 1.35 | 1.27 | 1.48 |
Pace moves the bill as much as the edge does. Going from 60 to 120 rounds an hour doubles the cost in every column, a larger change than the gap between any two bets in the table. At 120 rounds an hour, baccarat Banker is 0.08 chips an hour cheaper than a Bac Bo side, and baccarat Player is 0.13 chips dearer.
Dice Games Bac Bo Gets Compared With
Evolution’s games site lists Bac Bo in its live craps and dice section, so craps and Sic Bo are the natural yardsticks. Sic Bo uses 3 dice. A Small or Big bet pays evens but does not win on a triple, and a bet on a single number pays 1 to 1, 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 depending on how many dice show it, under the usual pay table. The craps pass line pays evens and wins 49.29% of the time.
| Game | Dice thrown | Bet | House edge |
| Bac Bo | 4 | Player or Banker | 1.13% |
| Bac Bo | 4 | Tie | 4.48% |
| Craps | 2 | Pass line | 1.41% |
| Sic Bo | 3 | Small or Big | 2.78% |
| Sic Bo | 3 | Single number | 7.87% |
On this yardstick the Bac Bo sides are the cheapest bet of the group. The Bac Bo Tie bet sits between the even-money bets of Sic Bo and its single-number bet, which is a reminder that a big headline payout is usually paid for in edge.
Choosing Between the Two
There is no verdict that fits everyone. The differences are easy to list, and each one matters for a different reason.
- Rules: Bac Bo asks you to compare two sums of dice. Baccarat’s third-card rules are fixed, so they shape the odds without asking the player to decide anything, but they take longer to explain.
- Cost on the sides: baccarat Banker is cheaper by 0.07 percentage points, which is 0.08 chips an hour at 1 chip a round and 120 rounds an hour.
- The Tie: Bac Bo’s costs 4.48%, baccarat’s costs 4.84% at 9 to 1 and 14.36% at 8 to 1, and all three are well above the sides.
- Table rules: commission, tie rates and extra bets vary by operator, and the rules panel is the only reliable guide.

Keeping the Same Limits in Either Game
Switching games does not change the principle. Every chip staked has a price, the bill grows with the pace of the game, and the budget belongs to the time before the first round. A game that deals faster needs a tighter limit, not a looser one. Our safer gambling page explains how to set deposit limits and time-outs, and where to get help if play stops feeling like a choice.
