Every chip staked on Player or Banker costs 1.13% on average, a price set by the 10% tie charge, and a system only decides how many chips pay it. What a system can change is the shape of the result, trading frequent small wins for a rare heavy loss or the reverse. This guide puts three systems through one test: flat betting, the Martingale and a three-step Paroli, each starting with a 100-chip bankroll and aiming for 120. The results come from exact calculation, cross-checked by 40,000 simulated sessions per system, and the guide ends with the cost of an hour at different stakes and a set of bankroll rules that survive the math.

Systems Change the Shape, Not the Price

A betting system is a rule for sizing the next bet. It cannot change the dice or the payout, so each chip it puts on Player or Banker still costs 1.13%. Add up every chip a system stakes in a session, take 1.13% of that total, and you have the expected result of the whole session, however the system looked along the way.

A system that stakes fewer chips loses less, and one that stakes more loses more, but neither says anything about the odds. The same holds for Banker, which has identical odds, and the payouts and rules guide shows where the 1.13% comes from.

How the Test Works

Each system starts with 100 chips and bets on Player. A session ends when the bankroll reaches 120, a profit of 20 chips, when it cannot cover the next stake, or after 1,000 rounds. The base stake is 1 chip, and a tie costs a tenth of whatever is staked while the next stake stays where it was.

Flat betting: 1 chip every round, whatever happened before.

Martingale: 1 chip to start, doubled after each loss and reset to 1 chip after a win.

Paroli: 1 chip to start, doubled after each win for up to three wins in a row (stakes of 1, 2 and 4 chips), then back to 1 chip. Any loss also resets the stake to 1 chip.

The numbers come from working through every possible sequence of rounds, so they carry no sampling error. The bankroll, goal and cap are our own choices, and other choices would shift the percentages without changing the conclusion.

Three Systems Side by Side

Each column is one system, and every percentage is exact rather than simulated.

Outcome

Flat, 1 chip

Martingale

Paroli, three steps

Reached the goal

37.01%

70.88%

63.69%

Hit the stop

0.275%

29.12%

12.49%

Still going at the cap

62.72%

less than 0.001%

23.82%

Average rounds played

778.6

41.3

472.8

Look at the first row alone and the Martingale seems to win, reaching the goal in 70.88% of sessions against 37.01% for flat betting. The second row is the catch: the Martingale hits the stop in 29.12% of sessions, while flat betting almost never does, at 0.275%.

Flat betting is slow instead. Its sessions last 778.6 rounds on average, and 62.72% are still unfinished after 1,000 rounds, which at 120 rounds an hour is more than eight hours of play. In real life the player’s clock would end most flat sessions before the goal or the stop arrived.

What Each Ending Is Worth

Percentages say how often an ending happens. The next table says what it is worth, as the average change in the bankroll in chips for sessions that ended that way.

Ending

Flat, 1 chip

Martingale

Paroli, three steps

Goal reached

+20.42

+20.45

+21.28

Stop hit

-99.51

-54.66

-99.47

Cap reached

-25.60

not reached in practice

-43.02

The goal pays slightly more than 20 chips because the final win can carry the balance past 120. Flat betting and Paroli stop only when the bankroll is nearly gone, so a stop costs almost all 100 chips. The Martingale stops sooner, when the next doubling no longer fits, so its average stop changes the bankroll by -54.66 chips, since earlier winning cycles had already added a few chips.

Set against a gain of +20.45 chips in the sessions that succeed, the shape is plain: many small wins and an occasional heavy loss.

The Martingale Ladder

Doubling after every loss makes the stakes climb fast. The table shows the ladder, the chips lost in total if every step has lost and the chance that a cycle opens with that many losses in a row, counting decided rounds only.

Loss number

Stake that lost

Running loss in chips

Chance of this many straight losses

1

1

1

50.00%

2

2

3

25.00%

3

4

7

12.50%

4

8

15

6.25%

5

16

31

3.13%

6

32

63

1.56%

7

64

127

0.781%

8

128

255

0.391%

With 100 chips, 6 losses in a row cost 63 chips, and the next stake of 64 would bring the total to 127, more than the bankroll holds. The plan stops there.

A cycle opens with 6 straight losses with a chance of 1.56%, which sounds remote. But a session needs about 20 winning cycles to reach the goal, each one another draw at that 1.56%, and the small risk compounds into a stop in 29.12% of sessions. Operators also set a maximum stake, which can cut the ladder short sooner than the bankroll would, and the limit on the table in front of you is the one that counts.

Paroli: Pressing a Win

Paroli raises the stake after a win instead of a loss. It is a plan for riding streaks where the Martingale fights them, and the dice recognize neither, as the streaks and road maps guide explains.

Three wins in a row at stakes of 1, 2 and 4 chips earn 7 chips and have a chance of 12.50% on decided rounds. A failed cycle always nets exactly 1 chip lost, because a loss at the second or third step cancels the winnings so far and costs one more. One success worth 7 against failures worth 1 each, at one chance in eight, is an even-money proposition on decided rounds, so the plan cannot beat the tie charge.

In our test Paroli reached the goal in 63.69% of sessions, hit the stop in 12.49% and was unfinished at the cap in 23.82%. A session averaged 472.8 rounds and staked 809.77 chips.

The Cost Stays the Same

This table settles the question. For each system it shows the average chips staked in a session, the average result and the result as a share of the chips staked.

System

Average chips staked

Average result in chips

Result as a share of chips staked

Flat, 1 chip

778.59

-8.77

1.13%

Martingale

126.02

-1.42

1.13%

Paroli, three steps

809.77

-9.12

1.13%

The last column is identical in every row, a loss of 1.13% of the chips staked. The Martingale looks cheapest at -1.42 chips a session, but only because its sessions end quickly: they stake 126.02 chips against 778.59 for flat betting. Stake the same total and it costs the same.

As a cross-check, each system was also run through 40,000 simulated sessions. The goal rates came out at 36.99% for flat betting, 71.02% for the Martingale and 63.68% for Paroli, against exact values of 37.01%, 70.88% and 63.69%. The gaps are the size that sampling noise produces at that scale.

What an Hour Costs at Three Stakes

Whatever system you choose, the price of an hour depends on how many chips you put in play. At our planning pace of 120 rounds an hour, the table shows the cost of staking the same amount on Player or Banker every round.

Stake per round

Chips staked in an hour

Expected cost in chips

One standard deviation in chips

1 chip

120

1.35

10.32

5 chips

600

6.76

51.62

25 chips

3,000

33.80

258.12

The swing is several times the cost. At 5 chips a round an hour is expected to cost 6.76 chips, yet one standard deviation is 51.62, so luck dominates any single hour. A good hour therefore proves nothing about the system behind it. Over many hours the cost, which grows in step with the rounds played, catches up with the swing, which grows more slowly.

The Tie bet is dearer and bumpier. At 1 chip a round it is expected to cost 5.37 chips an hour with a standard deviation of 49.03, against 1.35 and 10.32 on the sides, which is why the tie bet odds guide suggests a separate pot for it.

Other Guides in the Series

The Bac Bo hub lists all eight guides.
