Each extra ticket lifts that share and your bill by the same step, because the average return on a chip does not depend on how many tickets you hold: at an illustrative 20% retention a 1-chip ticket returns 0.80 chips, whether you own 1 ticket or 30. The reference session of 60 chips returns 48 on average and costs 12. This guide builds those rules, prices a fixed prize, compares a strip with six singles, tests three myths with the maths and puts a price on an hour of each format. The room model is a simplification, the retention figures are illustrations and bingo is pure chance.

Tickets Held Over Tickets in Play

The rule fits on one line: your approximate chance at a given prize is the tickets you hold divided by the tickets in play. With 6 among 200 that is 3.00%, and in the model a line, two lines and a full house each carry that same share.

The model treats a room as N independent tickets, each equally likely to finish first, which is a simplification. Real tickets share one set of balls and tend to finish together, and a tie splits the prize. The 90-ball guide tested the shortcut with rooms of real tickets and found the full house close to the model, while the 75-ball guide found real cards finishing a line a little later.

Tickets held

In a 50-ticket room

In a 200-ticket room

In a 1,000-ticket room

1

2.00%

0.500%

0.100%

3

6.00%

1.50%

0.300%

6

12.00%

3.00%

0.600%

12

24.00%

6.00%

1.20%

30

60.00%

15.00%

3.00%

Down a column the chance rises one for one with your tickets, and along a row it falls as the room grows. Thirty tickets in 200 reach 15.00%, thirty times the 0.500% of one ticket, and most rounds still pass without the prize. The figure is for one prize in one round and not for winning something every round.

Why a Chip Returns the Same With One Ticket or Thirty

A room that pays prizes out of sales pools the chips, keeps a share that we call retention and pays out the rest. Every ticket has the same chance at every prize, so every ticket draws the same share of the payout: 1 minus the retention, times the price, on average. At 20% retention a 1-chip ticket returns 0.80 chips, and thirty tickets return thirty times as much for thirty times the chips.

Room keeps

A 1-chip ticket returns

6 tickets, one game: return

6 tickets, one game: cost

10 games: return

10 games: cost

10%

0.90

5.40

0.60

54

6

20%

0.80

4.80

1.20

48

12

30%

0.70

4.20

1.80

42

18

Every amount in the table is in chips. More tickets buy more chances at the same value per chip, so the number you hold sets how fast you spend and how many prizes you see, and it leaves the deal as it was. The three retentions are illustrations, because none of the Gambling Commission pages we read gives a payout or retention figure for an online bingo room. The returns are averages over many games, and no single session pays the average.

Here is one session priced step by step. It uses 6 tickets a game for 10 games in a room of 200 at 20% retention, with the 90-ball split of 15%, 25% and 60% between line, two lines and full house.

Each game puts 6 chips on 6 tickets out of 200, a chance of about 3.00% at any one prize.

The 200 chips taken, less the 20% the room keeps, make a pot of 160 chips, and the full house takes 96 of it.

Across all three prizes your tickets are expected to collect 4.80 chips a game, 2.88 of them from the full house.

In a room of 1,000 tickets the full-house chance falls to 0.600% and the prize rises to 480 chips, so the average from the full house stays at 2.88 chips a game.

Over 10 games in the 200-ticket room you have a 26.26% chance of taking the one prize you aim for at least once, with 0.30 such prizes expected, and the session returns 48 of its 60 chips on average.

A Fixed Prize and the Overlay

A fixed prize pays the same however many tickets are sold, so the sales decide what your tickets are worth: the expected return is the prize times your share of the tickets sold. The table prices 6 tickets against a prize of 100 chips that is always paid, with 1-chip tickets and an equal chance for each. Overlay is our word for the chips a room adds when sales fall below the prize.

Tickets sold

Overlay (chips)

Chance for your 6 tickets

Expected return (chips)

Expected net after 6 chips staked

50

50

12.00%

12.00

+6.00

100

0

6.00%

6.00

0.00

200

0

3.00%

3.00

-3.00

400

0

1.50%

1.50

-4.50

At 100 tickets sold the prize equals the sales and the expected net is 0.00. With fewer sold the room covers the gap, and at 50 sold your 6 tickets have an expected net of +6.00. With more sold the same prize is split across more tickets, and the expected net is -4.50 at 400. These are averages, and one round pays one ticket. A jackpot tied to a call limit pays less often than the table assumes, and the prizes guide shows how often.

Strip or Six Single Tickets, Dabber or Auto-Daub

A 90-ball strip holds every number from 1 to 90 once, so its six tickets never share a number, and in our premises it costs 6 chips, the price of six singles. That layout makes a line certain by ball 73 and a full house certain by ball 85, which six independent tickets cannot promise. The table sets the two side by side.

Event

Strip of six

Six single tickets

A line by ball 35

12.81%

12.53%

A line by ball 45

42.10%

40.05%

A line by ball 55

82.64%

77.89%

A full house by ball 70

9.33%

9.09%

A full house by ball 75

28.14%

26.39%

A full house by ball 80

68.28%

60.91%

A full house by ball 84

98.17%

90.41%

The columns are close early and drift apart late, because the strip’s tickets leave fewer numbers to miss: by ball 80 a strip holds a full house 68.28% of the time against 60.91% for six singles. A game rarely goes that far in a room, since the 200-ticket model ends the average 90-ball game at ball 63.88 and has 95.82% of games over by ball 70. Where everyone holds the same kind of ticket, a strip and six singles own the same share of the room, so your chance at a prize is still your tickets over the room’s.

Marking is a question of workload and not of odds. Six tickets at 15 calls a minute mean 90 squares to check every minute. A dabber is the ink marker for paper tickets, and auto-daub lets the software cross off each called number on your tickets. Neither changes the draw, so the number of tickets you can follow is a practical limit and not a mathematical one.

Three Myths Checked With the Maths

These checks assume a fair draw, in which no ball has a memory or a favourite. The legal guide covers how the draw is tested.

The first myth is the lucky number. Every number is as likely as any other to be among the first 10 balls of a 90-ball game, 11.11%, and the nickname for 13, Unlucky for some, changes nothing. In 200,000 simulated 75-ball rounds, number 13 landed in the first 20 balls 26.72% of the time and number 7 26.86%, against the exact 26.67%.

The second is the overdue ball. After 40 balls of a 75-ball game 35 remain, and each has a 2.86% chance of being next, however long it has stayed out of earlier games. With 10 balls left it is 10.00% for each. The chance depends on the balls that remain and never on how long one has been absent.

The third is a pattern in the calls. The first ball of a game matches the previous game’s first ball 1.33% of the time in 75-ball and 1.11% in 90-ball, one chance in the size of the drum. Streaks and repeats occur in any random sequence and say nothing about the next ball, and charts of hot and cold numbers only record what has already been drawn.

Rounds and Spend per Hour by Format

The table prices an hour in a room of 200 tickets with 6 tickets a game. It rests on a ball every 4 seconds and a pause of 60 seconds between games, or 2 and 30 seconds in 30-ball, and real rooms vary.

Format

Games an hour

Chips in play an hour

Average cost an hour at 20% retention

Minutes for 10 games

90-ball, full house

11.41

68.5

13.7

52.6

80-ball, full card

12.25

73.5

14.7

49.0

75-ball, full card

11.69

70.2

14.0

51.3

75-ball, first line

31.22

187.3

37.5

19.2

30-ball, full card

53.98

323.9

64.8

11.1

A ticket costs the same in every row, so the gap is how many tickets you buy in an hour. A 75-ball game that ends at the first line plays 31.22 games an hour, 2.74 times the 90-ball pace, and 30-ball plays 4.73 times as many. The expected cost follows the spending, since the retention applies to every chip.

A Budget and a Stop Time in Chips

A budget is a number of chips and a stop time is a reading on the clock, and the two should agree before the first ball. No plan predicts a result, because bingo is chance, and a plan only caps the spend and the time.

Fix the chips first: the reference session is 60 chips, which is 10 games of 6 tickets at 1 chip each.

Turn the games into time: about 52.6 minutes in 90-ball, 51.3 in a 75-ball full-card game, 19.2 in a 75-ball first-line game and 11.1 in 30-ball.

Stop at whichever limit arrives first. In the fast formats the chips run out before the hour does, so the chips are the real limit.

Expect the whole budget to go. At the illustrative 20% retention the session costs 12 chips on average, but an average is not a cap and all 60 chips can be lost.

Write the limit down, stop when you reach it and do not add chips to win back a loss.

What Changes in Britain

The buying units are the first change. The glossaries we read describe a strip as a group of tickets sold together, almost always in 90-ball, where six tickets cover all 90 numbers, and pre-buy as paying for tickets in advance of a scheduled game. In our premises a strip is 6 chips a game, so one strip for 10 games is the 60-chip reference session, and a pre-buy moves the moment you pay without moving the odds.

The second is the pace. The first row of the hourly table is the 90-ball full house, the format the 90-ball guide describes, and the fast formats multiply the hourly spend, so check the ball count before you buy.

The third is what the rules ask of a room. The prizes guide sets out what the Gambling Commission’s standards ask a room to explain about prizes, and the legal guide covers the credit-card ban, the affordability checks and GAMSTOP, which all bear on spending.

Guides Worth Reading Next

Nine pages make up the series. The UK bingo hub shows which format is the usual one here, and each of the seven guides below answers a single question.

How online bingo works: the room types in a lobby, the cost of a bonus condition and the local rules to read before a first game.

90-ball bingo: the nicknames and the eyes-down call, the strip of six and the odds ball by ball.

75-ball bingo: the free centre, hand marking against software and a worked card ball by ball.

80-ball bingo: the 16 numbers of the 4×4 card and the odds by ball, where the guides disagree about diagonals.

30-ball bingo: the 3×3 card, its single prize and how a fast game stays inside a limit.

Prizes and jackpots: the odds of eleven 75-ball patterns, the six prize types and what the Gambling Commission asks a room to explain.

Is online bingo legal in the UK?: the Gambling Act, licence checks, age rules, complaints and the help line numbers.

What a Night Costs and Where to Get Help

The cost of bingo is the chips you spend, and an average return promises nothing back.
