The shape can be a line, two lines, four corners or all 16 numbers. One card needs 42.90 balls on average for its first line if diagonals count, 44.59 if they do not, and 76.24 balls to fill every square. This guide builds a card with code, sets out where six published guides disagree, gives the odds ball by ball and compares the format with 75-ball and 90-ball. The guides also disagree on how common 80-ball is in Britain, so the last section reports what each one says, and every odds figure is our own calculation.

The 4×4 Card and Its Colour Bands

The card has four columns and four rows, and every square holds a number. Three of the six guides we read say outright that there is no empty square, so a full card needs all 16 numbers called, where a 75-ball card needs 24 and keeps its centre free.

The 80 numbers split into four bands of 20, one band for each column. Five of the six guides colour the columns red for 1 to 20, yellow for 21 to 40 and blue for 41 to 60, and the last band, 61 to 80, is white in four of them and silver in one. Four guides say the colour is called with the number, as in blue 21 or white 63, so the colour tells you which column to scan.

Red 1-20

Yellow 21-40

Blue 41-60

White 61-80

3

21

43

61

4

24

45

72

8

27

51

74

19

30

57

77

Our example card comes from code, not from a room. The red column holds 3, 4, 8, 19, the yellow 21, 24, 27, 30, the blue 43, 45, 51, 57 and the white 61, 72, 74, 77, and no number repeats. One operator’s guide adds that a strip is five tickets carrying 80 numbers between them, with every number from 1 to 80 appearing once on the full strip.

Lines, Diagonals and Where the Guides Split

Four numbers in a row make a line. Rows and columns give 8 lines, and the two diagonals take the count to 10.

The guides split on the diagonals. Five of the six count a diagonal as a line, while the sixth lists only horizontal or vertical lines for its one-line, two-line and three-line prizes. Treat a diagonal win as a rule of the room and read it before you buy.

The choice moves the odds. With diagonals one card needs 42.90 balls on average for a first line and 52.26 for two lines, and without them the averages rise to 44.59 and 54.40.

Prizes and Shapes on 16 Numbers

The guides describe a ladder of prizes. All six name a line, four corners and a full house on all 16 numbers, five add two lines and three add three lines. Four mention the four middle squares as a shape, and one also lists an outside box of edge squares. Two guides say the room tells you the prize shape before the game begins.

Shape

Squares to cover

Average ball for one card

One chosen line

4

64.8

Four corners

4

64.8

Four middle squares

4

64.8

Outside box

12

74.77

Full house

16

76.24

Where the squares sit does not matter, only how many there are. Any four chosen numbers last until ball 64.8 on average, so a chosen line, four corners and the four middle squares tie. The first line of any kind comes sooner, at 42.90 balls with diagonals, because 10 lines race and the earliest wins.

The Odds by Ball

The table gives the chance that one card has completed a line by a given ball, with and without diagonals, and the chance of two lines. The two line columns are furthest apart around balls 40 and 50, which is where the diagonal rule matters most.

By ball

Line with diagonals

Line without diagonals

Two lines with diagonals

30

15.28%

12.68%

1.81%

40

41.18%

35.81%

12.36%

50

72.74%

67.12%

40.98%

60

93.94%

91.45%

78.74%

By ball 40 a card has a 41.18% chance of a line with diagonals and 35.81% without them, and by ball 60 the figures are 93.94% and 91.45%. A full card is far slower: 0.555% by ball 60, 9.20% by ball 70 and 31.72% by ball 75.

The figures come from exact formulas. A simulation of 200,000 rounds gave 42.90 balls for the first line and 76.25 for the full card, against the exact 42.90 and 76.24. The full-card average needs one line of arithmetic: the last of 16 numbers among 80 balls arrives on average at ball 16 times 81 divided by 17, which is 76.235.

One Card in Play

The example draw begins 24, 59, 61, 63, 8, 70, 34, 58, 22, 1, 69, 26. After 12 balls the card has 3 of its 16 numbers marked. Its first line is the second row, with 4, 24, 45, 72, and it completes on ball 56. That same ball completes a second line, so a two-lines prize would also fall on ball 56.

Without diagonals the first line is the same row on ball 56, so the rule changes nothing in this draw. The full card completes on ball 77, a touch after the average of 76.24, which is ordinary: 31.72% of cards are full by ball 75 and 63.80% by ball 78. The seed was fixed before the draw, so this is the draw that came out and not one we picked.

Room Size and Pace in Chips

In a room many cards race, and the game ends when the first one completes the prize shape. Our model treats a room as N independent cards, which is a simplification, and for 80-ball we have only the model, so read these figures as approximate.

Room (cards)

First line, diagonals count

Full card

Full-card games with a tie

50

17.13

62.98

12.69%

200

12.71

58.48

13.74%

1,000

9.21

53.70

15.06%

The middle columns show the average ball at which the game ends. The line game falls from 17.13 balls in a room of 50 cards to 9.21 in a room of 1,000, while the full-card game moves from 62.98 to 53.70 balls and ties grow more common. A tie splits the prize equally in this series.

Pace sets how many games fit in an hour. Take a full-card game in the 200-card room, with 6 cards a game, a ball every 4 seconds and a pause of 60 seconds.

A game lasts about 234 seconds, which is 58.48 balls at 4 seconds each, so with the pause a cycle takes 294 seconds.

An hour holds 12.25 cycles, so 6 cards a game put 73.5 chips into play.

At the illustrative 20% retention that costs 14.7 chips an hour on average.

The reference session of 10 games runs about 49.0 minutes and costs 12 chips of the 60 in play.

The retention figure is an illustration and not a measurement of any room. The 30-ball guide runs the same sums on a nine-number card whose games last about 37 seconds.

80-Ball Beside 75-Ball and 90-Ball

80-ball

75-ball

90-ball

Card

4×4, no free square

5×5 with a free centre

3×9 ticket with 15 numbers

Numbers to mark

16

24

15

Lines on one card

10 with diagonals

12

3 rows

Average balls to a first line

42.90

41.37

64.63

Average balls to a full card

76.24

72.96

85.31

Full-card game in a 200-card room, seconds

234

248

256

Full-card games per hour in that room

12.25

11.69

11.41

One guide says games finish faster than 90-ball but more slowly than 75-ball, and a second agrees that it moves faster than 90-ball. With one card our numbers agree: a full card takes 76.24 balls, against 85.31 for a 90-ball full house and 72.96 for a 75-ball blackout. In a 200-card room our model reorders the three, and 80-ball is the shortest at 234 seconds. The 75-ball guide and the 90-ball guide cover the other formats in full.

How Common 80-Ball Bingo Is in Britain

The guides disagree about how common the format is. One, published in August 2026, says it is primarily an online format and is rarely found in bingo halls, and another says it is not as commonly played as 90-ball or 75-ball. Three others call it popular, one of them ranking it among the most widely offered formats at online casinos and bingo halls. A comparison site that counted live rooms puts it behind both 90-ball and 75-ball. Taken together, treat 80-ball as a format you may or may not find in a given lobby.

The origin is thinly documented. One operator’s guide says 80-ball was invented in a bingo hall in the UK, though it admits nobody knows exactly where and when it was first played, and three guides trace it to shutterboard or shutter bingo. One adds that the name came from the small wooden shutter that the caller, or the caller’s assistant, closed over each number as it was called. A single operator’s guide gives a pace: a new game of its 80-ball room begins every four minutes on average, a little faster than our model’s cycle of 294 seconds.

If a lobby does list an 80-ball room, read its game rules first, since diagonals and prize shapes are where the guides differ. Whether the site is licensed is a separate question, and the legal guide shows how to check.

Where to Go Next in the Series

This guide is one of nine. The UK bingo hub sets the four ball counts in one table, and the seven guides below each answer one question.

How online bingo works: from pre-buy to payout, what certified should mean and how to read a bonus condition.

90-ball bingo: how a strip of six covers every number, with the odds for one ticket and for the strip.

75-ball bingo: the 5×5 card, how a room announces its pattern and the odds of four patterns ball by ball.

30-ball bingo: a 3×3 card of nine numbers and what games of about 37 seconds do to an hour’s spend.

Prizes and jackpots: fixed, pooled and progressive prizes worked through in chips.

How many tickets to buy: a rule of thumb for card counts, overlays and the cost of extra tickets.

Is online bingo legal in the UK?: the Gambling Act, licence checks, GAMSTOP and where to complain.

Keeping a Quick Card in Check

In our model an hour of full-card games with 6 cards a game puts 73.5 chips into play.
