Which buttons appear depends on your two cards, the dealer’s upcard and the rules of the table. Hit and stand are nearly always available, but double down, split, surrender and insurance show up only in specific situations. Here is what each one does, when you can use it and how it changes the amount you have at risk.

Key Takeaways: Blackjack Player Actions

Core Hit and Stand: Hitting draws an additional card to improve your hand until you stand or bust (exceed 21), while standing locks in your current total and passes action to the dealer.

Double Down and Split Stakes: Doubling down doubles your original wager in exchange for exactly one final card, whereas splitting divides matching cards into two separate playable hands, each requiring an additional equal stake.

Surrender Mechanics: When available as an opening move, surrender allows players to forfeit weak starting hands (such as hard 15 or 16) to recover 50% of their initial bet.

Avoid Insurance and Even Money: Offered when the dealer reveals an Ace, insurance and even-money bets pay 2:1 and 1:1 respectively, but carry an unfavorable house edge (~7.4%) that makes them mathematically costly over time.

The Buttons in One Table

Button

Effect

Available

Change to Your Stake

Hit

Deals you one more card

Whenever your total is under 21

No change

Stand

Fixes your total and passes play to the dealer

On any turn

No change

Double down

Doubles your stake and gives you one card only

On your first two cards

Adds 100% of your stake

Split

Divides a pair into two hands played in turn

When your first two cards match in value

Adds 100% of your stake for the second hand

Surrender

Ends the hand and returns half your stake

As your first decision, at tables that offer it

Costs you 50% of your stake

Insurance

Side bet that the dealer’s hole card gives a natural

When the dealer’s upcard is an Ace

Costs up to 50% of your stake

Not sure how hard and soft totals work? How to play online blackjack covers them from scratch.

Hit and Stand: The Choice You Make Most Often

Hit brings another card. You may keep hitting until you choose to stop or your total passes 21. Cross that line and you bust: the hand ends and the stake is gone before the dealer has done anything. RNG tables deal the card instantly, while at a live table the dealer takes it from the shoe.

Stand ends your turn with the total you hold. Players stand when the hand is strong enough to beat the dealer’s probable result, or when a further card would risk a bust that outweighs the gain.

Both buttons are on screen for the whole of your turn, and they clear once you stand or bust.

Double Down: Raise the Stake, Receive One Card

With double down you place a second stake equal to the first and take exactly one more card. It is offered only on your first two cards, and the hand then stands automatically.

A worked case: you stake £20, hold a 5 and a 6 against a dealer 6, and double. The table takes a further £20 and deals a single card. A 10 gives you 21 and a 2 gives you 13, but in either case £40 is now riding on the hand.

Tables set their own limits. Some allow doubling only on hard 9, 10 or 11, and some disallow it after a split (the double after split, or DAS, rule). The payouts and house edge guide puts a price on those limits.

Split: Two Hands From One Pair

Two cards of equal value, such as a pair of 8s or a King and a 10, allow you to split. The table asks for a second stake equal to the first, deals a new card to each hand and lets you play them one after the other, with each settled against the dealer separately.

Staking £20 on a pair of 8s, for example, leaves you with two £20 hands that each begin with an 8. If a third 8 arrives and re-splitting is allowed, you can split again, up to the limit the table sets.

Aces are treated differently almost everywhere. Typically each split Ace receives one card and no more, with no hitting or doubling, and sometimes no re-splitting. If that card is a 10-value one, the hand counts as an ordinary 21 and pays 1:1, not 3:2.

Remember the shortcut: split Aces and 8s, never split 10s or 5s. For every other pair, check the pairs chart in the basic strategy charts. And to split at all you need a pair and a balance that covers the extra stake.

Surrender: Walk Away for Half

Surrender lets you abandon a poor hand and get half your stake back, the casino keeping the other half. It must be the first thing you do, so it disappears once you hit, double or split, and plenty of tables do not offer it at all. The button, when there is one, appears as soon as your cards are dealt.

The usual online version is late surrender: it can be used only after the dealer has checked for a natural. If the dealer has blackjack the hand ends first, and if not you get the choice. It earns its keep on a hard 16 against a dealer 9, 10 or Ace and on a hard 15 against a 10.

Insurance and Even Money: Offers Worth Declining

Whenever the dealer shows an Ace, you may be offered insurance. It is a separate bet, capped at half your original stake, that pays 2:1 if the dealer’s hole card makes a natural. If the dealer does not have one, the insurance stake is lost and the hand carries on.

Take a £40 hand with £20 of insurance. A dealer blackjack costs you the £40 hand but pays £40 on the insurance, so you come out level. With no dealer blackjack, you are £20 down on the side bet with the hand still to play.

Even money is the same thing in different clothes. If you hold a natural and the dealer shows an Ace, the table offers to pay you 1:1 immediately rather than risk a push. Both come with a house edge, so basic strategy turns them down, and the figures are in the payouts and house edge guide.

A Button Has Gone Missing: What Usually Explains It

Double down is gone if you have already hit, if your balance cannot cover the second stake or if the table restricts doubling to particular totals.

Split requires a pair, enough balance for the extra stake and a table that has not hit its re-split limit.

Surrender exists only as your opening decision and only where the table has the rule.

Insurance is offered only against a dealer Ace.

The rules panel, normally behind an “i” or question-mark icon, spells out what the table permits. At live tables a decision timer is running, so act before it expires, and the guide to live dealer and RNG formats explains how those games differ. Variants including Spanish 21 and European Blackjack alter the buttons as well, as the rule variations guide shows.

Next: Knowing When to Press Each Button

Understanding the buttons is only half of the skill. The basic strategy charts tell you which to use against each dealer card, and the blackjack hub lists the rest of the series. Blackjack is paid entertainment that carries an expected cost, so keep within a budget and use our safer gambling page if you need help to do so.

❓ Online Blackjack Player Actions in the UK: Frequently Asked Questions

    <details class="faq-item">

When is double down available?

On your first two cards only, before you hit or split.
