Let\u2019s break that down simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine I analyze a game and determine there is a <strong>50% probability<\/strong> of an event happening. Mathematically, that should be priced at odds of <strong>+100<\/strong>. If a sportsbook is offering odds of <strong>+120<\/strong> for that same event, I have found value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-1-000-times-rule\"><strong>The &#8220;1,000 Times&#8221; Rule<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When I say an event has a 50% chance of happening, I\u2019m not saying the game will be &#8220;close.&#8221; I\u2019m saying that if that exact game were played 1,000 times, I expect my outcome to happen 500 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If my team loses 5-1 today, it doesn&#8217;t mean the bet was bad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If my team wins 6-0, it doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean the bet was excellent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The quality of a bet is determined by the <strong>math<\/strong>, not just the final score of a single game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beating-the-market-the-closing-line-value-clv\"><strong>Beating the Market: The Closing Line Value (CLV)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How do I truly evaluate my performance? I look at the <strong>Closing Line<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I place a bet at <strong>+120<\/strong> and, one minute before the game starts, the odds have dropped to <strong>+100<\/strong>, it means the market eventually agreed with my assessment. I &#8220;beat the closing line.&#8221; If the odds rose to <strong>+140<\/strong>, it means the market moved against me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the long run, if you consistently bet at higher odds than the final closing price, you will likely be a profitable bettor. However, I don&#8217;t obsess over CLV alone.
