Dealing and betting follow regular Omaha, including the demand for two hole cards and three board cards, but the halves are built apart from each other, so a player can use one pair of hole cards for the high hand and a second pair for the low. Below you will find how lows are formed and ranked, how chips are divided when a player wins twice or hands tie, and how often a board gives anyone a chance at a low. Five exercises finish the page, each asking who takes the high half and who takes the low.

Key Takeaways: Omaha Hi-Lo Rules

Split Pot Dynamics: Pots split equally between the best high hand and best qualifying low (8 or lower); if no low qualifies, the winning high hand scoops the entire pot.

Qualifying Low Rules: A low hand requires five unpaired ranks of 8 or lower, where aces play low and straights or flushes do not count against it; 5-4-3-2-A is the best possible low.

Independent Hand Construction: Players must use exactly two hole cards and three board cards for each half, allowing different card pairs to form the high and low hands.

Board Low Probability: A low requires at least three distinct board cards from ace to 8, which occurs on 60.09% of boards, leaving 39.91% of boards with no possible low.

Two Halves, Two Winners

The game goes by a second name, Omaha eight-or-better. The best high hand, ordered by the usual poker hand rankings, earns one half of the pot, while the best qualifying low earns the other.

When no player has a qualifying low, the high hand scoops the full pot. Winning both halves is also possible, whether with the same five cards or with two different groups of five.

What Counts as a Low

A qualifying low is made of five cards with distinct ranks, all of them eight or lower. In the low an ace is the smallest card, while the same ace can be the biggest card of the high hand. Neither straights nor flushes matter when lows are ranked, which is why A-2-3-4-5, a straight in the high hand, is also the best possible low.

To compare two lows, look at each hand’s highest card and award the lower one. If those cards are equal, move on to the second card, then the third, and so forth. Between ace and eight there are 56 possible sets of five ranks, and the table shows some of them side by side.

Low hand

Standing

5-4-3-2-A

The strongest low there is

7-4-3-2-A

Beats 7-5-3-2-A, as its second card is lower

8-4-3-2-A

Beats 8-5-3-2-A for the same reason

8-7-6-5-4

The weakest low that still qualifies

9-4-3-2-A

Out, since a nine is too high

6-6-4-3-A

Out, since the sixes repeat a rank

Dividing the Pot

Each half is settled on its own, and a tie can divide either one. The table follows a pot of 80 chips through the usual outcomes.

Situation

High half, 40 chips

Low half, 40 chips

Different winners

Maya receives 40

Jean receives 40

One scoop

Maya receives 40

Maya receives 40, so 80 in all

Low tied between two players

Maya receives 40

Jean and Priya receive 20 each

No hand qualifies for low

Maya receives all 80

Nothing to award

Ending up with just a quarter of the pot, which follows a split of the low half, is known as being quartered. When the chips will not divide evenly, the spare one is added to the high half.

Two Hands From the Same Cards

The Omaha poker rules guide explains the two-and-three requirement, and here it is checked separately for each half. A pair of hole cards with three board cards builds the high hand, and another pair with other board cards may build the low.

Imagine holding Ah 2s Kc Kd with Ks 9c 7d 5h 4c on the board. Playing Kc Kd with Ks 9c 7d gives the high hand three of a kind, kings, and playing Ah 2s with 7d 5h 4c gives the low hand 7-5-4-2-A. What the other players hold decides whether either hand collects its half.

Does the Board Allow a Low?

Every low uses three board cards, which means the board needs at least three distinct ranks between ace and eight before a qualifying hand can exist. Around 60.09% of five-card boards meet that condition. On the remaining 39.91% there is no low, so the high hand claims the entire pot.

A friendly board still does not give everyone a low, because two fitting hole cards are required too. For that reason a good share of Hi-Lo pots has one winner only.

Exercises: Five Hi-Lo Showdowns

Every exercise gives the five board cards and four hole cards per player. Decide who collects the high half and who collects the low half.

❓ Practice: Who Collects Each Half?

    <details class="faq-item">

Board: Qc 9d 6h 4s 2d.
