A card costs what it costs in any other format, but a round in our 200-card room model lasts about 37 seconds, so an hour holds 53.98 rounds, 4.73 times as many as 90-ball, and the spending per hour grows by the same factor. This guide shows a card generated by code, the odds ball by ball, why 25.57% of rounds in our model end in a tie and how to hold a budget in chips. No Canadian official page we read describes 30-ball bingo, so the rules come from commercial guides and every odds figure is our own calculation.

The 3×3 Card and Its Three Columns

The card is a 3×3 grid, so 9 squares in 3 columns, and every square holds a number. Six guides and glossaries agree on that grid, one says outright that, unlike a 75-ball card, the tickets have no gaps, and none describes a free space. Three of them group the columns in tens: 1 to 10 in the first, 11 to 20 in the second and 21 to 30 in the third.

1-10

11-20

21-30

1

13

22

7

14

26

10

18

30

Our example card comes from code. The first column holds 1, 7, 10, the second holds 13, 14, 18 and the third holds 22, 26, 30. One guide says the numbers run from lowest to highest from top to bottom, as they do here.

Speed bingo is the usual second name. Glossaries from two bingo sites define it as the 30-ball game with a 3×3 card and a single full-house prize, and two guides also call the game speed bingo.

One Prize, the Full Card

There is one way to win: be the first card to cover all 9 numbers. Each of the six guides and glossaries says so, and one adds that you cannot win lines. The guides call a full card a full house, and a row of three numbers pays nothing, so a card showing two full rows is still waiting for its last three numbers.

Online, the software checks your card against the balls called, as in the other formats. At this pace auto-marking is the practical choice, and one guide says the software marks the calls on your tickets. The guides give no prize amounts, and one says cheaper games typically have smaller prize funds and that the number of cards you can buy for a game varies by site.

The Odds by Ball

Nine numbers have to come out of 30, so nothing happens early. By ball 12 the chance that one card is full is 0.002%, about 1 in 65,000, and by ball 18 it is still 0.340%. The figures come from exact formulas, and a simulation of 200,000 rounds averaged 27.90 balls against the exact 27.9.

By ball

Chance one card is full

12

0.002%

15

0.035%

18

0.340%

20

1.17%

22

3.48%

25

14.28%

27

32.76%

28

48.28%

The chance climbs fast at the end. It is 14.28% at ball 25, 32.76% at ball 27 and 48.28% at ball 28, so more than half of all cards are still waiting for ball 29 or 30, and about two cards in three finish on one of the last three calls.

Two figures can be checked by hand. The last of s numbers among N balls appears on average at s times (N + 1) divided by (s + 1), so for 9 numbers among 30 balls that is 9 times 31 divided by 10, or 27.9. For all 9 numbers to fall within the first 25 balls, the chance is 21 times 20 times 19 times 18 times 17, divided by 30 times 29 times 28 times 27 times 26, which is 14.28%.

One Card in Play

The example draw begins 13, 11, 27, 24, 2, 28, 23, 26, 7, 19, 4, 29. After 12 balls, 3 of the card’s 9 numbers are marked, and the card is full on ball 28, almost on the average of 27.9. The table puts the chance of finishing by ball 27 at 32.76%, so a card full on ball 28 sits in the larger group that needs one of the last three calls.

In our model of a room of 200 cards the average round ends at ball 18.35, far earlier than this card, so it would usually be too late to win. We fixed the seed before the draw, so the draw was not chosen to look good.

Room Size and Ties

One card alone is slow and a room is fast, because many cards race and the round ends when the first one is full. We model a room as N independent cards, a simplification, since real cards draw on the same balls and tend to finish together. For 75-ball and 90-ball we also simulated real cards, and for 30-ball we have only the model.

Room (cards)

Average ball at the end of the round

Round length, seconds

Rounds with a tie

50

20.56

41

22.40%

200

18.35

37

25.57%

1,000

16.17

32

29.75%

With only 9 numbers to complete from 30, many cards finish on the same ball. In our room of 200 cards, 25.57% of rounds end with two or more full cards on the same ball and the prize is split equally, and the share of ties rises from 22.40% with 50 cards to 29.75% with 1,000.

Rounds, Spend and Time Against 90-Ball

The price per card is the same in both formats, and the pace is not. The table follows a full-card game in a room of 200 cards with 6 cards a round. The ball interval and the pause are assumptions of our model, since the guides say balls come faster in this format but give no figures.

30-ball

90-ball

Seconds per ball

2

4

Pause between rounds, seconds

30

60

Full-card round, seconds

37

256

Rounds per hour

53.98

11.41

Chips spent per hour

323.9

68.5

Expected cost per hour at 20% retention, chips

64.8

13.7

Minutes to play 10 rounds

11.1

52.6

The 30-ball game plays 4.73 times as many rounds an hour as the 90-ball game, so it spends 4.73 times as many chips, while nothing about a single round costs more. One guide says a player short of time could play two or more 30-ball games in the time of one 90-ball or 75-ball game, which agrees with that direction. The retention figure is an illustration and not a measurement of any room.

The guides disagree on game length: under a minute in a glossary, around 2 minutes in one guide and a few minutes in another. Our model gives 37 seconds of calling plus a 30-second pause, a cycle of 67 seconds, which sits inside that range.

Keeping a Fast Game on Budget

When rounds are this short, a time limit alone does not protect a budget, so add a limit in chips. The steps use the reference session.

Set the limit in chips before the first ball. The reference session is 60 chips, which is 10 rounds of 6 cards at 1 chip each.

Turn the limit into rounds. At 6 cards a round, 60 chips pay for 10 rounds.

Turn the rounds into time. At 67 seconds a cycle, 10 rounds take about 11.1 minutes in 30-ball, against 52.6 minutes in 90-ball.

Check the expected cost. At the illustrative 20% retention, the session costs 12 chips on average out of 60.

Stop when the rounds are used or the clock runs out, whichever comes first.

Fewer cards a round is the other lever, since one card a round spends a sixth of the chips of six cards and the round takes the same time. Six cards in a room of 200 have about a 3.00% chance of taking the prize in a round, and the chance of at least one prize in a session of 10 rounds is 26.26%. Those are approximations from the room model, and the odds and cost guide shows how they are built.

Where 30-Ball Appears in Canada

None of the AGCO definitions we read gives a ball count, and no regulator or provincial page we read describes 30-ball bingo. The only Canadian-market page we found that mentions it is a promotional page for named casinos, so we do not rely on it. A UK guide says the format is usually found only at online bingo sites and not in bricks-and-mortar halls.

That fits the hall texts we read, where Alberta’s caller announces each ball and every declared bingo is checked by call-back or a verification unit. If a Canadian lobby lists a speed game, read what it pays, whether a tie splits the prize and how many cards one player may hold, because the guides give no figures for any of them. The legality guide explains which sites each province allows.

Other Guides in the Series

This guide is one of nine. The Canadian bingo hub lines the four variants up in one table, and the seven guides below each take one topic.

How online bingo works: the vocabulary of a lobby and of a hall, the room types and a first round worked in chips.

90-ball bingo: the 3×9 ticket, six tickets to a strip and 85.31 balls on average to a full house.

75-ball bingo: the 5×5 face from Alberta’s hall terms and the chance of each pattern ball by ball.

80-ball bingo: the 4×4 card in four colours, and the diagonal rule on which the guides disagree.

Patterns and prize types: fixed, shared and progressive prizes, and the AGCO’s regular and special game classes.

Odds and cost: the reference session for every format, and why no number is lucky or overdue.

Legality and safety: the Criminal Code, the provincial systems, and where to complain or find help.

Fast Rounds, Firm Limits and Where to Get Help

In our 200-card model, six cards a round spend 323.9 chips an hour, 4.73 times what 90-ball spends.
