The first card to complete the prize shape of the game, whether a line, four corners or all 16 numbers, wins. One card needs 42.90 balls on average for its first line if diagonals count, 44.59 if they do not, and 76.24 balls to fill every square. This guide shows a card generated by code, the points where published guides disagree, the odds ball by ball and how the format compares with 75-ball and 90-ball. No Canadian official page we read describes 80-ball bingo, so the rules come from commercial guides and every odds figure is our own calculation.

The 4×4 Card and Its Colour Bands

The card has four columns and four rows, with a number in every square. The six guides we read agree on that grid and on the 16 numbers, and three of them say outright that there is no free square, which is what separates it from the 75-ball face and its free centre. A full card therefore needs all 16 numbers called, against 24 on a face.

The 80 numbers are divided into four bands of 20, one band for each column. Most guides colour the columns red for 1 to 20, yellow for 21 to 40, blue for 41 to 60 and white for 61 to 80, and one calls the last colour silver. Three guides add that the caller announces the colour with the number, as in Red 7 or White 63, so the colour tells you which column to scan.

Red 1-20

Yellow 21-40

Blue 41-60

White 61-80

3

28

45

62

7

30

51

63

10

37

58

69

12

38

60

79

Our example card comes from code, not from a room. The red column holds 3, 7, 10, 12, the yellow column holds 28, 30, 37, 38, the blue column holds 45, 51, 58, 60 and the white column holds 62, 63, 69, 79, and no number repeats.

Lines, Diagonals and Where the Guides Split

Four numbers in a row make a line. Rows and columns give 8 lines, and the two diagonals take the count to 10.

Published guides split on the diagonals. Five of the six count them among the winning shapes, including all three room guides, and the sixth, a comparison page, lists only horizontal and vertical lines for its one-line, two-line and three-line prizes. Treat a diagonal win as a rule of the room, and check it in the game rules before you buy.

The choice moves the odds. With diagonals, one card needs 42.90 balls on average for a first line and 52.26 for two lines, and without them the averages are 44.59 and 54.40.

Prizes and Shapes on 16 Numbers

Four guides describe the same ladder of prizes: one line, two lines, three lines in some games, and a full house on all 16 numbers. Two guides add that the full house pays the largest prize. Shape games sit beside the ladder, and four corners appear in all six guides and the four middle squares in four of them. Three guides say the room shows the prize shape before each round.

Shape

Squares to cover

Average ball for one card

One chosen line

4

64.8

Four corners

4

64.8

Four middle squares

4

64.8

Outside box (edge squares)

12

74.77

Full house

16

76.24

Where the squares sit does not matter, only how many there are. Any four chosen numbers last until ball 64.8 on average, so four corners and the four middle squares tie with a chosen line. The first line of any kind comes sooner, at 42.90 balls with diagonals, because 10 lines race and the earliest one wins.

The Odds by Ball

The table shows the chance that one card has completed a line by a given ball, with and without diagonals, and the chance of two lines. The figures come from exact formulas. A simulation of 200,000 rounds returned 42.90 balls for the first line and 76.25 for the full card, against the exact 42.90 and 76.24.

By ball

Line with diagonals

Line without diagonals

Two lines with diagonals

30

15.28%

12.68%

1.81%

40

41.18%

35.81%

12.36%

50

72.74%

67.12%

40.98%

60

93.94%

91.45%

78.74%

By ball 40 a card has a 41.18% chance of a line with diagonals and 35.81% without them, and by ball 60 the two figures are 93.94% and 91.45%. One card is full by ball 60 with a chance of 0.555%, by ball 70 with 9.20% and by ball 75 with 31.72%, and the chance only reaches 63.80% at ball 78.

Two figures can be reproduced on a calculator. For four chosen numbers to be called by ball 40, multiply 40 over 80, 39 over 79, 38 over 78 and 37 over 77, which gives 5.78%. For the last of s numbers among N balls, the average position is s times (N + 1) divided by (s + 1), so for 16 numbers in 80 balls it is 16 times 81 divided by 17, or 76.235, which the tables round to 76.24.

One Card in Play

The example draw begins 71, 79, 8, 60, 80, 68, 18, 56, 49, 51, 35, 73. After 12 balls, 3 of the card’s 16 numbers are marked. The first line is the bottom row (12, 38, 60, 79), complete on ball 32, and with diagonals counting the second line follows on ball 34.

Without diagonals the first line is the same row on ball 32, so the rule changes nothing in this draw. The full card is complete on ball 62, well ahead of the average of 76.24, since the chance that one card is full by ball 60 is only 0.555% and by ball 65 it is 2.40%. The seed was fixed before the draw, so this is the draw that came out and not one we picked.

Room Size and Pace in Chips

In a room, many cards race and the round ends when the first one completes the prize shape. We model a room as N independent cards, which is a simplification, because real cards draw on the same balls and finish together more often. For 75-ball and 90-ball we also simulated real cards, and for 80-ball we have only the model, so read these figures as approximate.

Room (cards)

First line, diagonals count

Full card

Full-card rounds with a tie

50

17.13

62.98

12.69%

200

12.71

58.48

13.74%

1,000

9.21

53.70

15.06%

The middle columns show the average ball at which the round ends. A bigger room cuts the line round sharply, from 17.13 balls with 50 cards to 9.21 with 1,000, while the full-card round moves from 62.98 to 53.70 balls and ties become more common. In our model a tie splits the prize equally.

Pace sets how many rounds fit in an hour, and every round costs the same. Take a full-card game in a room of 200 cards, with 6 cards a round, a ball every 4 seconds and a pause of 60 seconds between rounds.

A full-card round lasts about 234 seconds, which is 58.48 balls at 4 seconds each, so a round and its pause take 294 seconds.

That cycle fits 12.25 times in an hour, so 6 cards a round spend 73.5 chips an hour.

At the illustrative 20% retention, the expected cost is 14.7 chips an hour.

The reference session of 10 rounds runs about 49.0 minutes and costs 12 chips on average out of 60 in play.

The retention figure is an illustration and not a measurement of any room. The 30-ball guide runs the same arithmetic on a nine-number card whose rounds last about 37 seconds.

80-Ball Next to 75-Ball and 90-Ball

The table sets the three formats side by side, using one card unless noted. The last two rows use our model of a 200-card room.

80-ball

75-ball

90-ball

Card

4×4, no free square

5×5 with a free centre

3×9 ticket with 15 numbers

Numbers to mark

16

24

15

Lines on one card

10 with diagonals

12

3 rows

Average balls to a first line

42.90

41.37

64.63

Average balls to a full card

76.24

72.96

85.31

Full-card round in a 200-card room, seconds

234

248

256

Full-card rounds per hour in that room

12.25

11.69

11.41

Three guides call 80-ball quicker than 90-ball, and one adds that it finishes more slowly than 75-ball. With one card the numbers agree: a full card takes 76.24 balls against 85.31 for a 90-ball full house and 72.96 for a 75-ball blackout. In a room of 200 cards our model reorders the three, and the 80-ball round is the shortest at 234 seconds. The 75-ball guide and the 90-ball guide cover the other two formats in full.

Where 80-Ball Appears in Canada

The AGCO definitions we read give no ball count, and none of the regulator or provincial pages we read describes 80-ball bingo. Where a page names the ball count of a scheduled game, it is 75 balls: British Columbia’s provincial bingo page names the 75-ball variant for two of its rooms, and Alberta’s community bingo terms describe a hall card drawn from 75 balls.

The Canadian-market pages we found that say where the format is offered are promotional pages for named casinos, so we do not treat them as evidence, and no provincial page we read lists an 80-ball room.

Outside Canada the format is better documented. Two guides say 80-ball was popularized in bingo halls as shutter bingo, and one says it is not played as widely as 75-ball or 90-ball. Five of our six guides come from UK sites, so read their rules as British practice.

If a Canadian lobby does list an 80-ball room, read its game rules first, since diagonals and prize shapes are where the guides differ. Whether the site is allowed in your province is a separate question, and the legality guide answers it province by province.

Other Guides in the Series

This guide is one of nine. The Canadian bingo hub puts the four variants in a single table, and the seven guides below each take one topic.

How online bingo works: the seven steps of a round, what a certified draw means and how a bonus condition reads.

90-ball bingo: the 3×9 ticket with 15 numbers, the odds ball by ball and where the British format sits in Canada.

75-ball bingo: the 24-number face from Alberta’s hall terms, the claim rules and the odds of each pattern by ball.

30-ball bingo: the 3×3 card, model rounds of about 37 seconds and how an hour of them compares with 90-ball.

Patterns and prize types: how a prize is set, from a fixed amount to a share of sales, and what the AGCO says about regular and special games.

Odds and cost: the math of buying one card or thirty, the overlay table and why no number is lucky.

Legality and safety: whether a site is allowed where you live, how age checks and payouts should work and the signs of an unlicensed one.

What a Quick Card Costs and Where to Get Help

In our model, an hour of full-card rounds with 6 cards a round spends 73.5 chips.
